The best paint colours for each room

Painting your home is as much about creating the right feeling as it is about the look. It’s been well documented that colour can have a significant impact on mood. For example, red and yellow are known to increase hunger which is why they’re such popular colours in fast food marketing. Considering that, it doesn’t make much sense to constantly surround yourself with colours that will make you angry or hungry or just plain sad, especially in your very own home. That’s why we’ve put together some tips on the best colours to choose for each room.

Bedrooms
You start and end every day in your bedroom, so it’s important that it feels like somewhere you can relax, unwind and feel calm. Pastels, muted earth tones or neutral tones are best for an adult bedroom, while pastels and cool colours are recommended for children and nurseries. Warm or bright colours can have an energising effect, which is the last thing a parent wants to deal with at bedtime!

Bathrooms
One of the most common colours for a bathroom is white – it’s sterile, clean and feels pure. But for some people, white can be a bit too boring, or simply won’t complement some of their other decor choices. The solution is to add to it with soft greens and blues to create a calm and stress-free environment that makes every shower feel like a spa retreat.

Kitchen
Hunger-inducing yellows and reds are best avoided in the kitchen, especially if you’re trying not to snack or eat as much. Blue, on the other hand, is calming and can create a relaxed atmosphere which is especially useful for entertaining. Not only is it calming, but it’s also known to encourage creativity, so get ready to start your Masterchef journey.

Study/home office
If your home has a study or office area, chances are you need to be able to concentrate and get things done when you’re in that space. Bright colours can encourage activity and creativity, but might also cause a distraction. Greens are a great option if you’ll be in there for hours on end, as they encourage concentration and focus.

Match tones with your personal style
Of course, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing a paint colour. If you’re more of a creative person, you might prefer bright, vibrant colours mixed and matched throughout the home. Or, you might be a lover of monochrome with the occasional colour accent provided by your furniture and art choices. Your home is your own and should reflect your personality and taste – as long as it makes you feel good.
